The history of the White River starts with the more recent geological history of Indiana.  Glaciers once covered the land that is now Madison County, Indiana.  As the glaciers pushed southward then retreated, the much of the landscape we are familiar with today was formed. Their retreat left the landscape in Madison County flat and full of wetlands that have now been drained for development and agriculture. For a more in-depth look at the geological history of Indiana visit the Indiana Geological Survey page.
